Comments To LareDOS
Mrs. Guerra,
I truly believe in the cause of your journal and feel it is a shame that LareDOS was forcibly removed from our airport and city hall by our mayor.

Bravo Meg... " What was that trite campaign slogan of the Mayor's right man, right time? Mayor, wrong woman, wrong newspaper."
I am really appalled at the very thought of a citizen of this country, let alone an elected official, behaving so barbarically concerning the very blood that fuels all that this country represents. Our forefathers, my father and many friends have sacrificed much on the battle fields of national and international terrain to protect these liberties.
Que barbaro...

Hello Meg:
I hope this E-mail finds you well and in good spirits. It would appear that we most probably and hopefully have a one-term mayor. This was the same mayor that promised an investigation into the corruption at the PD. This mayor has made a lot of promises he has not followed through with. And now, to attack free speech! His behavior is intolerable. But, lest we forget - he's the man! Well, it is time for "the man" to get off his duff and read the United States Constitution. We, as citizens, have every right to read any newspaper we desire to read. You, as a newspaper, have every right to freedom of the press. If the grand old mayor of Laredo doesn't agree with what you say, too bad. This incident in itself has shown his ineptitude to realistically hold any political position. It could be that "the man" is just plain ignorant and totally unqualified. Hopefully the good citizens of Laredo will see "the man" for what he really is and in the next election will show him the door.

I cannot tell you my name, but I want y'all to know that censorship will not be tolerated in Laredo. Raul Salinas ran on a platform of transparency in government and got 9,665 votes, and we are not going to allow censorship of the press in Laredo, Texas, no matter what abuses he perpetrates or tries to pull off.

Dear Mayor Salinas,
In August 2006 I retired from 18 years as a tenured
English Instructor at Laredo Community College.
I live in Austin now, but my students, friends,
colleagues and concerns for Laredo remain in my heart.
I keep up through LMT online, friends, and LareDos.
The decision to pull LareDos from the airport is to
step back to the era of Pepe Martin where democracy
was not allowed to flourish.
I am a First Amendment "junkie." Ms. Guerra has
devoted herself to the highest quality of journalism.
If you think that visitors to Laredo will be given a
negative impression of Laredo by seeing LareDos, you
are dead wrong.
I hate to see this affront go to court, but I hope Ms.
Guerra challenges this issue on Constitutional
grounds.
I voted for you expecting better things for Laredo.
Please allow LareDos at the airport so that visitors
will know that my former home is not a place of
repression, but a vital city with a growing number of
educated people who are able to read, debate, and
decide issues in a democracy.
Sincerely yours,
Sue Rickels
Criticism can only be tolerated for so long (bottom line) whether it is in poor taste, poor views or poor journalism, if it is negative marketing campaign your seeking to try boost the LareDos jump to main stream reading, Good Luck!
Respectfully,
David Salinas
Hi, ya, Meggie. This is Janie from Austin. Hope all is well, especially now that King Salinas was* brought to his senses*. Seems like he tripped over the First Amendment -- maybe he thought it was Princess?
Someone mentioned in the Recuerdos Forum that they "respected him for using wisdom and apologizing to you". I think the FEAR FACTOR kicked in. Shooooooot, if it had been wisdom, he would've called you immediately and apologized, put the newspapers back, invited you for a cupa ambition at Espumas.....made a personal and sincere gesture of some sort. I'm curious just how many of them lawyers he had with him at the meeting?
BTW, I hear Dr. Neo is writing a review of a friend's book, La Gringa, by Pedro Martinez. Any idea which edition it will be featured in?
Janie
I am appalled by what Mayor Salinas has done in removing LareDOS from various public venues. Not only are his actions unconstitutional, they are unconscionable. A healthy democracy demands a free press and as many media voices as a community can muster. Laredo is fortunate to be able to support a quality alternative media publication like LareDOS.
It is a serious matter when a public official feels empowered to censor the media, whether it's by holding a closed door meeting or by tossing newspapers out of City Hall.
I hope LareDOS will continue it's good work and continue to cover the city as an advocate for the citizens of Laredo.

Meg,
Your countervail to the Mayor's despicable and unwarranted
violation of our 1st amendment right to free expression is
commendable. And you're also right about his baseless vanity with
the coins but you need not fall into the same crack by your statement
regarding "your tax dollars" and "wrong woman, wrong newspaper".
Really, it's "our" tax dollars and censorship knows no gender and no
form of communication. It's just "wrong" period.
