Childhood Memories exhibit
on display at TAMIU

The Childhood Memories of Encinal: Stories of South Texas Exhibition will be on view at the Texas A&M International University Student Center through October 31. The event is presented by Hecho en Encinal, a non-profit arts organization serving rural South Texas.
Dr. Jaclyn Jeffrey, professor of Anthropology at TAMIU, led this project last year for Hecho en Encinal. Working with the community, Jeffrey interviewed people who grew up in Encinal between the 1930s and 1970. Stories from these interviews were compiled into a booklet and pictures were collected from the time period.
The exhibition includes photographic images of community activities and people and buildings, as well as excerpts from the interviews. Booklets will be available at the exhibition. The project was sponsored in part by funding from the Texas Council for the Humanities and the Stockmen's Bank in Cotulla. Texas A&M International University provided in-kind support.
Hecho en Encinal plans to do a follow-up project in 2003 about food and cooking in Encinal. The Encinal Foodways Project will include a series of cooking demonstrations of local food customs (such as making tamales at Christmas), interviews with local people who cook, and publication of a booklet with local recipes, photographs, and cooking stories.
For more information about Hecho en Encinal or the Childhood Memories project please contact Dr. Jeffrey at 326-2001.
