County Retired Teachers
membership campaign underway

The
Webb County Unit of the Texas Retired Teachers Association
is currently promoting a membership campaign.
Alfredo Guerra, president of the Webb County Unit
of the TRTA, urges all retired public school employees
to join the TRTA, the only organization in Texas that
works exclusively for retired public school and higher
education personnel.
Guerra is quick to note that although this is important,
the true value of joining TRTA is revealed in its
mission statement, which states: "TRTA shall
promote the professional, economic, intellectual,
social, and physical well-being of its members; shall
encourage volunteer opportunities in the community;
and shall provide advocacy for improved retirement
benefits for all public school and higher education
retirees.
"At our monthly meetings, held at Blessed Sacrament
Parish Hall, we're provided with current information
on economic, social, and health issues," said
Guerra. "The majority of our members are community-oriented
people who volunteer at several nursing homes, and
some assist the homebound with their medical appointments.
In our school-related activities, we have those who
read to the children at different schools. There are
also some members who are part of the Literacy Volunteer
group and those who offer their services at the Laredo
Little Theatre.
"We also work towards providing scholarships
to worthy students," Guerra continued. "At
the present time we are involved in a children's book
drive. Now, for those who would rather be in an 'inactive
status,' please know that you are most welcomed. Your
joining our group would increase our enrollment and
give us more clout in the legislature. The larger
our membership, the larger our influence. Your membership
is vital even though you may not even be able to attend
the local unit's meetings or be involved in the volunteer
activities."
