A
typical Santa Maria White Tail Buck

"We hunted the Santa Maria Ranch for five seasons.
We were very particular about what we harvested, mature
bucks only. We had a rule of only one mature trophy
buck per person per season. If you were not certain
that a deer was mature, you could not harvest it.
If you did not take a Buck, you could harvest a young
Doe. Typically we took 2 Bucks and 3 Does total each
year. The bucks were all over 4 1/2 years old. The
oldest was 6 1/2 years old. The quality of the deer
on the ranch is good with many 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 year
old deer. We won't talk about some of the tremendous
Trophy Bucks that were seen but did not give us a
clean shot at them. We took 1 - 11 pt., 2 - 10 pt.,
1 - 9 pt., 4 - 8 pt., and 3 long horn older spikes.
The bucks would field dress between 145 and 165 pounds.
The Does field dressed around 120 pounds. There are
plenty of deer on the ranch. We would generally see
between 4 to 8 bucks per hunt and the same number
of Does. This was on all stands simultaneously.
I hunted the ranch with my father and my children
and we all enjoyed our family time down there.
The Pre-rut and Rut are really active on the ranch.
The Rut starts around December 15th. each year."
