LCC Foundation secures
first major gift
The Laredo Community College Education
Foundation recently secured a major contribution of
$100,000, which will help LCC reinforce Zapata's connection
to higher education in Laredo.
The Foundation's board of directors recently hosted
a luncheon to formally recognize the Lauro Garza family
and Renato Ramirez for their significant contributions.
Upon the donors' request, the Foundation has committed
the funds to the Lauro Garza Scholarship Endowment
at LCC.
The Lauro Garza family made a donation of $75,000
in memory of Zapata rancher Lauro Garza.
Ramirez, president of International Bank of Commerce
in Zapata and member of the LCC Education Foundation,
gave $25,000 to the endowment.
Foundation president Edward Sherwood said that members
of the non-profit group are grateful for the healthy
start it has received to assist LCC in its development
of student learning and associated educational services
delivered to Laredo and surrounding communities. The
Foundation was formally launched in June.
The Garza-endowed scholarship program was established
in 2000 to assist Zapata high school students beginning
their higher education at LCC. The endowment was originally
launched with a $50,000 gift from the Lauro Garza
family.
