Laredo Bucks raise funds
for TAMIU athletics scholarships
by Paul de la Peña-Franceschi
A recent post-game auction by the Laredo Bucks has
raised $10,000 for athletics scholarships at Texas
A&M International University. The Bucks wore Halloween-themed
jerseys during their Nov. 3 3-0 win over the Austin
Ice Bats, which were auctioned off after the game.
"This is a wonderful example of the generous
spirit of the Laredoans who make up our fan base,"
said Bucks president John Beckelhymer. "Our players
and staff wanted to give back to the community which
has given so much to the Bucks. The reason the Bucks
have been so successful is community support, and
this was a terrific way to give back and support TAMIU
athletics."
Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski filled the role of
auctioneer as the Bucks players were individually
introduced and their jerseys auctioned off.
"As an organization we made a commitment a long
time ago to the city of Laredo," said Ruskowski.
"We are happy and proud to help out the city
and the fans that have treated us so well. TAMIU has
always been there for us whenever we've needed help."
Defensemen Dion Hyman and Serge Dube's jerseys were
the top money raisers, with each going for over $1,000.
A special autographed goalie mask was also auctioned,
raising the most money for an individual item at $1,500.
The Bucks are also interested in supporting other
community based initiatives. In public appearances
at venues such as hospitals and schools, team members
speak about hockey, sports, fitness, and making the
right choices in life. To schedule a Bucks visit or
