Newcomers and Friends of Laredo
offers a warm welcome
By Paul de la Peña-Franceschi
The Newcomers and Friends of Laredo,
Inc., are celebrating 20 years of greeting people
new to the Gateway City. The group recently met at
Espumas Pub and Café to celebrate its anniversary
and to meet with founder Jody Townsend. The wife of
the first Laredo city manager Marvin Townsend, Jody
Townsend has been an avid supporter of the city since
the group was formed.
Newcomers and Friends of Laredo is comprised of people
new to the city, as well as Laredoans who are eager
to promote the welfare and history of the city. The
group has discovered that gathering to meet new friends
makes the adjustment to moving to a new place much
easier and more enjoyable. New members are greeted
with true South Texas hospitality and assistance becoming
familiar with Laredo and what it has to offer.
Newcomers and Friends of Laredo is also a social club
that hosts a variety of events throughout the year.
These include, but are not limited to, luncheons with
guest speakers on topics of interest to new residents;
adult socials; family socials; coffees sponsored by
local businesses; brunches; afternoon and evening
buncos; bridge matches; Canasta; "Calling All
Cooks," demonstrating and sharing various recipe
ideas and cooking techniques; arts and crafts; golf;
bowling; children's playgroups; Mom's nights out;
scrapbooking; a book club; and helping hands. There
is even a babysitting service within the group, which
allows members flexibility to attend various events.
The Newcomers and Friends of Laredo seek new members
and welcome anyone new to Laredo and South Texas.
