Salute to Education scholarship
applications available now
Applications
are now available for the Ford Salute to Education scholarship,
and can be obtained by contacting any high school counselor
in Laredo, or by visiting www.salutetoeducationtx.com.
One hundred scholarships of $500 each will be awarded
to Laredo’s Class of 2003 next spring, said Hank
Sames, Sames Motor Company’s Dealer Principal
and Ford Salute to Education chairman, in an announcement
made at Ford Salute to Education’s 7th annual
Scholarship Launch, where counselors from throughout
Laredo gathered to find out what was new with the program
and pick up new applications.
Students graduating in spring 2003 and attending any
high school in Laredo are eligible to apply. Applicants
need only to complete five short-essay questions listed
on the application, and include a transcript and a letter
of recommendation. Students can apply for a scholarship
in one of 10 categories: the Arts, Athletics, Foreign
Language, General, Language Arts, Mathematics, Performing
Arts, Science, Social Science and Vocational/Technical.
The deadline to apply is February 7, 2003; applications
must be postmarked on or before February 7, 2003.
Since 2001, scholarship recipients who enrolled at Texas
A&M International University have been eligible
to apply for matching scholarships provided by A&M
International. Now, recipients who enroll at Laredo
Community College will also have the same opportunity.
Scholarship recipients who enroll at these colleges
may apply for the matching scholarship, and provided
they maintain grade and hours requirements, will be
eligible for an additional $500 scholarship provided
by LCC or TAMIU.
"We’re very proud to be able to team up with
these institutions to provide additional funds for these
students so that they can remain active members of our
community," said Sames.
The Ford Salute to Education scholarship program seeks
to provide all students with the opportunity to further
their education. Recipients will include students who
are shining stars in their communities through their
extra-curricular activities and those who have achieved
success despite facing overwhelming obstacles.
To date, more than 300 of Laredo’s students have
received Ford Salute to Education scholarships. Funding
is generated through new vehicle sales and leases from
Sames Motor Company; additional funding is provided
by Ford Division, Lincoln Mercury, and Ford Motor Credit
Co. For more information, call (210) 225-3353 or visit
