Women’s
City Club hosts successful
Pennies for Tennies campaign
The
Women’s City Club recently hosted its annual
Pennies for Tennies campaign telethon at the KGNS
studios. The event raised over $27,000 and was sponsored
by Dr. Ike’s. Elena Amici served as MC.
Pennies for Tennies is one of the largest fundraising
projects sponsored the Women’s City Club. Proceeds
from this event are used to purchase tennis shoes
and eyeglasses for students needing assistance in
LISD and UISD schools as well as local private schools.
The top finalists this year included Arndt Elementary,
Amparo Gutierrez Elementary, Leyendecker Elementary,
J. C. Martin Elementary, Mary Help of Christians School,
Prada Elementary, Salinas Elementary, St. Augustine
Elementary, United Day School, and United South High
School.
The two grand prizes this year were donated by Sam’s
Club and Nancy de Anda. The other winners receive
lunches for their winning class from McDonald’s,
Wendy’s, Chick-Fil-A, Jack-In-The-Box, Burger
King, and Pizza Hut.
Begun in 1992, the Pennies for Tennies campaign is
considered an extra special project by the Women’s
City Club because Laredo children are able to participate
and provide the largest part of the donations. Money
is raised by school classes having bake sales, car
washes, basketball games, and challenging each other’s
classes.
