Hollywood story consultant Vogler to teach writing workshop in Marfa
Christopher Vogler, author of the best-selling book, The Writer's Journey, will conduct a weekend writing retreat Friday through Sunday, July 15 -17, in Marfa. Vogler has been a story analyst and consultant for major Hollywood studios for over 15 years, as well as a development executive, producer, and screenwriter at 20th Century Fox. He will share his knowledge of powerful storytelling in the town where the classic movie Giant was filmed. Retreat attendees will stay at Marfa's newly restored Paisano Hotel where Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean lived during the filming.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to get personal instruction from an acknowledged master of plot and character development,” said Bonnie Orr, Program Committee Chairman of the Writers' League of Texas. We feel very fortunate to have someone of Vogler's caliber teaching a workshop here in Texas . To ensure individual attention for participants, class size will be limited to 15, and early registration is recommended.”
Vogler's story consulting credits include such top-grossing feature films as The Lion King, The Thin Red Line, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and many more. According to Flatiron magazine, “The Writer's Journey is required reading for anyone striving to develop strong characters in their stories and add the kind of depth and transformational power that will set a story apart.”
Vogler writes, “Stories come from deep places. Our idea of storytelling is imbedded in the swirling currents of myths and human psychology, and they have much to tell us about how to structure our stories and give depth to our characters. You'll learn the patterns that give our stories mythic resonance and power and how to write multi-dimensional characters at this retreat.”
Registration information is available at www.writersleague.org or by calling (512) 499-8914. Cost of the workshop is $199 for members of the Writers League of Texas, or $244 for non-members. Hotel and transportation expenses are separate.
