¶ LCC English instructor Carlos Flores's novel Sex As a Political Condition won third prize and $250 in the University of California - Irvine 's 2003 Chicano/Latino Literary Contest. Flores 's manuscript was described by judge Manuel Ramos as "a rollicking, bigger-than-life adventure that respects no sacred cows. The wild, wacky, and humorous characters come to life on the pages of this modern saga."
¶ The newest issue of La Frontera , LCC's literary magazine, was recently unveiled by editor Dr. Toni Howell during a reception recognizing contributing writers and artists and thanking those who assisted with the production of the magazine, particularly Student Assistant Editors Ricardo Guajardo and Marcela Alvarez. Copies of the magazine are available on the first floor of LCC's Kazen Center or from Dr. Howell in the Adkins Building .
¶ A reading and book signing was recently held at Open for Angela Alejitos Gammon's Amanda Flink in Pink, a humorous, rhyming children's book, recently published by Trafford Publishing Co. It's now available through Amazon.com or from the author.
¶ New York City writer and editor Lori Carlson Hijuelos plans to include "Soy como soy y qué," a poem by Raquel Valle Sentíes, in Red Hot Salsa, a collection of bilingual poetry Hijuelos is editing. It is a companion book to her first collection of poetry, Cool Salsa: Bilingual Poems on Growing Up Latino in the U.S. (Fawcett Books, 1995).
