ine local collegestudents were recent recipients of the "Gary G. Jacobs, Mr. South Texas, 2002 Scholarship" at an awards reception hosted by Sen. Judith Zaffirini, president of the Mr. South Texas Foundation, and Vidal TreviÒo, administrator of the D.D. Hachar Charitable Trust Fund.

This year’s Mr. South Texas Foundation scholarship recipients are Marili Cavazos, Belem GarcÌa, Victor Garza, Robert Juarez, Felipe De Jes·s Pantoja, David Arnoldo Saenz, Basilio Salas III, Arlyn Solis, and Luis Torres. Each received a $1,000 scholarship.

Treviño has assumed responsibilities for administering the Mr. South Texas Foundation fund through the D.D. Hachar Trust Fund at Laredo National Bank.

"There’s nothing more important than education," said Jacobs, LNB president and namesake of this year’s scholarship. "Exemplary leadership in our youth is a quality that should be rewarded, and these students reflect the Mr. South Texas motto, ‘from scholarship to leadership.’"

To qualify for the Mr. South Texas Foundation Scholarship, students must plan to return to or stay in South Texas after obtaining at least one college degree, be enrolled at an institution of higher learning, or have been accepted to one. A high school diploma is required with an A or B average, the student must be a resident of Laredo for at least two years, and reflect not only a history of leadership, but also have exemplary character and have great leadership potential.

Sen. Zaffirini began the the Mr. South Texas Scholarship Foundation in 1999 after her designation as Mr. South Texas to assist and encourage Laredo area youth to strive for excellence in leadership.
