Why will you vote for the candidate
for whom you vote?

By Henri D. Kahn

Do you really know why you would vote for WAWI? Is it because her name is catchy?

What does she do for a living?

Will Tony Sanchez get your vote because he is a Laredoan and will be good for Laredo? Perhaps he will do more for you, because of his Hispanic/M ex ican ancestry?

Is Sanchez more Hispanic than Morales? Sanchez’ paternal grandmother was Anglo.

Were/are either of Morales’ grandparents Anglo? Do you even care?

Are you aware of Tony's participation or lack thereof in Laredo civic affairs over the past several years? Will this make any difference to you when you step up to the ballot box?

Do you want Judy Gutierrez to keep her job because the Webb County Commissioners Court needs a woman’s touch?

Maybe if John Worldpeace had done something significant to diminish world conflict, you would cast your vote for him. Or . . . is his last name too hokie for you?

Do you find John Cronyn’s drop dead looks a quality that will enhance the Tex/Mex border’s fortune in the U.S. Senate? Or Is a former Negro Dallas Mayor’s Race more conducive to Texas’ best interests in D.C.?

Will Henry Cuellar’s temporary fall from grace with the local Democrat powers-that-be leave him without your help at the ballot box?

Is Gov. Rick Perry’s cold, aloof, and seemingly redneck demeanor attractive to you?

Or . . . do you think his cowboy boots are too gaudy?

If going with the flow is important to you, please know that there are thousands of Rick Perry types "lookin’ for love in all the wrong places" throughout the great State of Texas.

Sanchez will need 500,000 new registered voters to have an even chance to occupy the Governor’s mansion in Austin. Want him bad enough to provide gratis help registering voters? Loverboy Henry Cisneros says he will try.

Is incumbent Washington legislator Bonilla really a coconut? Does his choice of a white girl to be his wife bother you?

There are two Moraleses running for public office. Do you know the first name of each?

Some people claim that former County Judge Andy Ramos won the election, because folks thought they were voting for Andres Ramos, RIP, TexMex railroad executive.

You do know that the Tony Sanchez, RIP, who not only created what is now Sanchez Oil & Gas and progressive International Bank of Commerce as well as providing Laredoans of a less than border-blueblood ancestry with an opportunity to strut their stuff, is not the Tony Sanchez running for governor. Right?

Kazen is a time-honored name in Laredo politics. Do you feel that the current Kazen running for County Clerk is made of the same stuff as his cousins and uncles?

Does Mercurio’s prescence at virtually every public affair in Webb County impress you?

Does his continual battle with Sheriff Juan Garza depress you?

Do you think that that those four minutes in the ballot box you give to Louis Bruni will fuel his combative nature to whip the Webb County Commissioners Court into shape during a four year judgeship?

Do you admire Billy Hall in his continuing quest for public service? He certainly doesn’t need the money. Will his health hold out?

Do you admire Justice of the Peace Oscar 0. Martinez’ devotion to duty and background as a businessman? Or . . . do you believe that being an attorney better qualifies a person to judge?

Does donating or not accepting all or a part of your compensation as public officeholder impress you? Urdiales for County Commissioner and Delia Perales for County Treasurer think it does.

Would it bother you to know that your personal physician has kept you fuming in his patient waiting room because he was attending to LCC board business?

Or . . . would you rationalize your discomfort by understanding that Dr. Leonidas

Cigarroa is to be admired for being civic-minded?

Finally, if you lived on Del Mar Blvd. across from United Middle School and Santos Benavides Elementary, would you sign a petition to prohibit the forest of multicolored politico/slogan posters from infecting your front yard?

I would sign it in a New York second!

By the way, are you going to vote?
