Asked about modern poetry, Naomi Shihab Nye, prominent in the world of poetry, wrote in our notebook while lunching as my guest at The Meadows: “Modern poetic elements of sound are used diverse ways. Modern poetry cares a great deal about sound; however, not as much as predictable sound as in end rhyme. Modern poetry is often friendly, accessible, honoring detail and daily life, but still contains a resonance of sound and often a more simple diction than older poetry.”
Naomi has published more than 20 books of prose and poetry. She has received a Lanman Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and four Pushcart Prizes.
Her two latest publications, just out, are a book of poems, A Maze Me, exquisite, and a novel, Going Going, which deals with smaller stores being replaced by large chain stores.

News from Omar Sanchez
Omar Sanchez, who graduated from Martin High in 1952, writes from Brownsville , where he owns a clothing store.
He prefaces his biography with high praise for his old teacher. He was drafted during the Korean War, and served in France during his tour of duty. He graduated from East Texas State in Commerce. Then he went to work for a New York clothing firm, which sent him to Brownsville.
“After a few years I opened my own store, and I am very busy. I married a girl from Hebbronville. She is newly retired from teaching at Southmost College. We had three children, now all on their own, well-educated. They all have good jobs.”
Omar did not mention grandchildren, but his letter showed he has enjoyed a good life. How wonderful that I can feel I had a little part in his education, and great for him to remember me. Gracias.
Letters from home
Mildred Reyna, one of my 20 correspondents, wrote of the death of Bess Walker Quiros recently. She recounted an incident that Bess had en route to San Miguel de Allende.
“I recall the trip she and the children made during the War to San Miguel de Allende. She was driving. A bus in front of her loaded with passengers had a bunch of stuff tied on top. A feather mattress fell off, struck the hood of Bess' car, and split in half, with feathers falling on the windshield, blinding her. She managed to pull over to the side of the road. The bus also stopped. A woman hopped off and demanded Bess pay her for the mattress. Needless to say, Bess did not pay her. She and the children could have been killed!”
