LISD middle school students graduate from Dell Techknow program, earn free home computer
Fifty-eight middle school students from four LISD schools recently completed the Dell TechKnow program at a graduation ceremony held at Nixon High School .
A collaborative effort of LISD and Dell, Inc., the Dell TechKnow program is a 40-hour after-school program providing underserved middle school students with an opportunity to earn a home computer and learn technology skills that promote self-esteem, academic success, and prepare students for opportunities in today's technology-driven world.
“We are committed to developing technology-rich environments that support student achievement and produce lifelong learners able to succeed in an information society,” said LISD superintendent Dr. R. Jerry Barber. “The Dell TechKnow program is one program that helps our students be prepared to compete in a global economy and build a better future.”
Students in the Dell TechKnow program receive a refurbished Dell desktop computer at no charge and work in teams to learn computer basics. Students learn how to take apart and re-build the computer; install software; upgrade, diagnose, and fix basic hardware problems; and use word processing and educational software. In addition, students must meet certain program requirements such as attending school, demonstrating good citizenship, and sustaining or improving their grades. Upon completion of the course, students earn a refurbished Dell desktop computer, operating system, and software to take home, and one year of Internet access.
Teachers from Laredo ISD serve as the instructors for the Dell TechKnow program. Students from Christian, Cigarro, Memorial and Lamar Middle Schools participate in the program.
“To be more efficient and profitable, businesses throughout the world are taking advantage of technological advancements,” said State Senator Judith Zaffirini, Texas District 21. “To work in the business arena or help make a difference in any arena, technology skills are critical. Dell TechKnow helps our students in that effort.”
“As a legislator, programs which effect and benefit our children are of vital importance to me,” said State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Texas District 26. “As our population continues to grow and especially the population of Texas , it is of utmost importance that we continue to educate ourselves and our children of an ever evolving industry. Technological programs, such as Dell TechKnow can only enable our children and especially those ‘at-risk' to gain the necessary skills to compete in the global 21st century. The fact that this program combats the dropout rate promotes academic success and self-esteem is a true testament to Dell's global citizenship.”
