The Bethany House Resource Center will be open during the day for the homeless and indigent. At night, this facility will have the capacity for 20 men, eight women, and two efficiency units for families. The Center will have showers, toilets, a laundry room, phones, and mail services. There will also be case workers available to evaluate homeless and indigent clients and to get them involved in individual programs. The Resource Center is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Bethany House was established in 1982 by Father Charles McNaboe in the old Texas Hat Company, the city block that now houses the Webb County Jail. A year later, the shelter moved to its present location at 819 Hidalgo Street . More than 100 volunteers help serve more than 1,000 meals per day, six days a week to the homeless and indigent. Bethany House also delivers 600 meals, five days a week to homes. They have a thrift shop and a learning center for tutoring and cultural enrichment for children between the ages of 5 to 17. Bethany House also sponsors a program to serve meals to children in housing authority homes.
