DKG
recognizes Ruth Fierros
Ruth V. Fierros,
retired Laredo teacher and poet, was honored with
the Members in Print Award of the Delta Kappa Gamma
Society at their recent state reunion in Waco. Her
volume, Welcome to My World, was nominated by the
Alpha Nu Chapter of Laredo.
The Members in Print were honored during opening night
ceremonies in the Brazos Room of the Waco Convention
Center. The publishers met their fellow members from
all over the state later in the weekend.
Drury to dance
festivals
Nelda Guerrero Drury, former Laredoan and for long
instructor in folk dance at San Antonio College, has
her cousin Sarita Ligarde Gilbert as her guest. This
summer Nelda will go to Kansas to attend a jazz festival
and to Maine to attend a folk dance festival.
Lowry family
holds reunion
The descendants of Dr. Ruby Lowry held a family reunion
recently at Middle Creek Ranch. About 30 attended.
Attending were Mary Lowry Ervin, San Antonio; Ira
Lowry, Palisades, California; Todd Lowry, Lexington,
Virginia; Willis E. (Bill) Lowry, New Braunfels; Dr.
Tim Lowry, Austin; and their wives and some of their
children and grandchildren.
Ollie Lowry writes: "There is usually a musical
program and review for the grandchildren who enjoy
playing their musical instruments."
Visit to the library
The Meadows, where I live, has a nice little library
where one may find magazines, the Wall Street Journal,
and books, some in large print. I read most of the
time I am not sleeping.
This week I am reading A Paradise Called Texas by
Janice Jordan Shefelman, descendant of immigrants
who came from Germany to Indianola and then cross-country
to New Braunfels and Fredericksburg in 1848. Another
is Julie and Romeo, about a love affair between two
60-year-olds, in spite of family objections, light,
amusing, and sexy; and A Very Human President, (about
Lyndon Johnson) by Jack Valenti, prompts one to read
all night.
