Groundbreaking
for LCC South on June 20
Laredo
area citizens can share the joy of an unprecedented
moment in South Texas history as Laredo Community College
prepares to launch construction for its second comprehensive
campus, LCC South, on Thursday, June 20.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new campus will begin
at 9 a.m. with musical entertainment by college student
performance ensembles, followed by the groundbreaking
ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be provided.
College officials are extending a special invitation
to communities from the region and the state to witness
and participate in what they proudly anticipate will
be a history making event.
"This is a significant moment in higher education
for Laredo, Nuevo Laredo, and our surrounding communities,"
says Francisco Martinez, Jr., Dean of Second Campus
Planning. "As the hometown college for Laredo and
the South Texas region, Laredo Community College encourages
members of the community to bring a shovel and join
the college in breaking ground for LCC South."
The second campus will include seven buildings on a
60-acre tract of land at 5500 South Zapata Highway (U.S.
83) near the Santa Rita housing development. Among the
anchor programs planned for LCC South are Advanced Technology,
Automotive Technology/Diesel Technology/Auto Body Repair,
Child Development, and Criminal Justice/Police Academy.
General academic instruction will also be offered to
support a variety of degree plans, including the Associate
in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied
Science. Additionally, adult basic education and community
education courses will be available at LCC South.
The South Laredo campus will also feature a library
and student development services -- including financial
aid, health services, career counseling, special populations,
and tutoring.
