High
school students receive Los Caballeros
de la Republica del Río Grande scholarships
Area high school students
were awarded scholarships from Los Caballeros de la
Republica del Río Grande at a recent reception
at the Washington's Birthday Celebration Association
office.
The Los Caballeros de la Republica del Río
Grande scholarships were established by Los Caballeros
to encourage local high school students to pursue
higher education. Proceeds from the annual Caballeros
Cocktail party, held prior to the Society of Martha
Washington Pageant and Ball, help fund the scholarships.
Scholarship recipients are nominated on the basis
of academic merit by their high school counselors.
Each student received $1,000 that must be used at
either Texas A&M International University or Laredo
Community College.
Students who received the scholarships, and the fields
of study they intend to pursue, include Derly O. Cuellar,
St. Augustine High School, veterinary medicine; Zulema
Garza, United High School, interior design; Vanessa
Nicole Lopez, Martin High School, nursing; Jessica
Susana Martinez, Nixon High School, engineering; Mark
Matthew Moke, Alexander High School, education and
law enforcement; Johanna Rodriguez, Cigarroa High
School, architecture; and Heriberto Zamora, United
South High School, science.
Presenting the scholarships were Caballeros Jefe Steve
LaMantia, Sub-Jefe Nancy Blair, and Tesorero Anthony
Treviño. The selection committee included Steve
LaMantia, Anthony Treviño, Nancy Blair, George
E. Glassford, and John McKeown.
The Caballeros de la Republica del Río Grande
was established in 1961 to entertain and host distinguished
guests of the Washington's Birthday Celebration. Membership
of the Caballeros is comprised of former presidents
of the WBCA, local Mr. South Texas honorees, and the
men who have portrayed George Washington.
