High school students receive Los Caballeros
de la Republica del Río Grande scholarships

Area high school students were awarded scholarships from Los Caballeros de la Republica del Río Grande at a recent reception at the Washington's Birthday Celebration Association office.
The Los Caballeros de la Republica del Río Grande scholarships were established by Los Caballeros to encourage local high school students to pursue higher education. Proceeds from the annual Caballeros Cocktail party, held prior to the Society of Martha Washington Pageant and Ball, help fund the scholarships.
Scholarship recipients are nominated on the basis of academic merit by their high school counselors. Each student received $1,000 that must be used at either Texas A&M International University or Laredo Community College.
Students who received the scholarships, and the fields of study they intend to pursue, include Derly O. Cuellar, St. Augustine High School, veterinary medicine; Zulema Garza, United High School, interior design; Vanessa Nicole Lopez, Martin High School, nursing; Jessica Susana Martinez, Nixon High School, engineering; Mark Matthew Moke, Alexander High School, education and law enforcement; Johanna Rodriguez, Cigarroa High School, architecture; and Heriberto Zamora, United South High School, science.
Presenting the scholarships were Caballeros Jefe Steve LaMantia, Sub-Jefe Nancy Blair, and Tesorero Anthony Treviño. The selection committee included Steve LaMantia, Anthony Treviño, Nancy Blair, George E. Glassford, and John McKeown.
The Caballeros de la Republica del Río Grande was established in 1961 to entertain and host distinguished guests of the Washington's Birthday Celebration. Membership of the Caballeros is comprised of former presidents of the WBCA, local Mr. South Texas honorees, and the men who have portrayed George Washington.
