Lucy Meriwether D.A.R. hosts
Flag Day ceremony

The Lucy Meriwether chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in partnership with Laredo National Bank, hosted a recent flag ceremony at the Flag of the Americas Park in honor of U.S. Flag Day and of Laredo veterans. Regent Sheila Glassford welcomed everyone to the early morning event. The Webb County Sheriff's Color Guard presented the colors and TAPS were played by Magnet School director Robert Lopez. Boy Scout Troop #404 led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and Cub Scout Pack #91 was also in attendance. Mrs. Kathy Profitt then sang her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner for those present.
Rosemary Contreras of the Korean War Veterans Commemoration Committee presented special Korean War Veteran Lapel Pins to Vernon Profitt and Hector Garza, with many veterans of the Korean War and World War II in attendance. Mrs. Contreras then recognized Richard Rossell, a World War II veteran whose brother is still listed as missing in action from the Korean War. Mrs. Glassford closed the ceremony with the following words: "Now as we gaze with awe at the majesty of the flag, we fervently pray that 'long may it wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.'" The event participants were then treated to a breakfast buffet at the Laredo National Bank hospitality suite.
