LareDOS, A Journal of the Borderlands, was established
in December 1994 by María Eugenia Guerra, an
environmentalist and a journalist, and Richard Geissler,
a much respected photographer and community activist.
The news journal, which was launched as a forum to discuss
public issues not covered by other local media, has
enjoyed over its seven-year life a reputation for veracity,
doggedness, and in-depth coverage.
In 1996 Guerra bought out Geissler's interest in the
paper, ending the constant and polarized debate between
Guerra and Geissler over whether the journal should
look and read like a newspaper or a magazine.
LareDOS is published
monthly by ShuString Productions, Inc.
The publication has a small staff that includes publisher
and CEO Guerra, editor Tom Moore, Jr., designer Reiver
Rodriguez of Diseños y Más, circulation
manager Jorge Medina, writer/reporter Sandra Iruegas,
and controller Melissa Guerra.
A host of regular contributors fill the pages of LareDOS,
including ranchers and environmentalists Bebe and Sissy
Fenstermaker, wildlife rehabilitator Nancy Cowing Umphres,
herbalist Tony Ramirez, business owner Henri Kahn, movie
critics William Nichols and Sean Chadwell, and writer
and writing instructor Ranch Koch. Other contributors
include former Texas Department of Agriculture director
Jim Hightower, former Laredoan Linda Cuellar, Laredo
educator Sylvana Longoria, university instructor Carol
Brochin, former Laredoan Robert Mendoza, environmentalist
Dr. Jim Earhart, organic gardener Daniel Muñoa,
photographer Caleb Bolch, and activist Chito Vela.
A "usual suspects" list of other contributors
include political prognosticator Cholulah Bankhead,
gossip purveyor Woncha Telmé Moore, media commentator
Justin O' Piñon, Mystery Customer writer Enigma
Pesadilla, asker of public questions Fraid Naught, and
riled up rowdy Kay Wavos.

MARIA
EUGENIA GUERRA, Publisher and CEO, is a native Laredoan
who "lived away from here long enough to know that
bell peppers come in four colors." Her leave of
absence from the frontera took her to Austin and Wimberley
where she raised her son George J. Altgelt, who is a
student at St. Mary's University School of Law. Guerra
is also a rancher in Zapata County, managing ranchland
that has been in her family for 200 years. She is a
1966 graduate of J.W. Nixon High School and a 1988 graduate
of Southwest Texas State University.
TOM
MOORE, has been the editor of
LareDOS since 1997. He is a graduate of Texas A&M
International University. Originally from San Antonio,
he has lived in Laredo for over 20 years. He has had
fiction and non-fiction published in local cultural
journal La Frontera, the online pop culture magazine
Popimage, and in Historidc Laredo. An
incredibly refined sense of humor belies his stern,
professional mien.
REIVER
RODRÍGUEZ RODRÍGUEZ
is a native of Abasolo, Tamaulipas Mexico. He has served
as Graphic Design Manager and System Administrator of
El Mañana, considered one of the premier
dailies along the frontera.
He is the owner of Diseños y Mas (Designs and
More), the company that designs LareDOS. He has completed
courses of graphic design in Monterrey, at the Poyntyer
Institute in St. Petesburg, Florida, and in San Antonio,
Austin and Houston. He is an ISO 9000 certified Quality
Auditor. He writes for LareDOS, pinch hits as a photographer,
and is the buyer of all electronics and computers for
the company.
JORGE MEDINA is the physical plant manager for
the offices of LareDOS
at 1812 Houston Street. He is also the circulation manager
and courier for the company.
SANDRA IRUEGAS, a native of Houston, is a graduate
United South High School. She has worked as a staff
writer for the Desert Dispatch in Barstow, CA.
She resides in Río Bravo, Texas with her husband
and family. She is a staff writer and photographer for
LareDOS.
MELISSA L. GUERRA is the company's controller.
Smart girl, she has a day job with a petroleum gathering
company.
