Eating
and activity: making changes
|
Most
of us at least occasionally eat too much, eat things
that aren't healthy, and are less active than we want
to be. Doing the right thing consistently is rare,
and it is rare because it is hard.
But hard is not impossible. Here are some things to
think about if you are looking to make some changes
in your approach to eating and activity. If you are
feeling overwhelmed, please talk to your health care
provider. There is help for you.
Try to think of one specific thing you would like
to change when it comes to your eating or activity.
You have to come up with something specific. "Eat
less" is not specific; "use one percent
milk instead of whole milk" is specific. "Get
more exercise" is not specific, "ride exercise
bike 20 minutes, three times a week" is specific.
Next, think of why you want to make this change. It
has to be something that motivates you, something
that will keep you going as you work to make the change.
"My doctor told me to" probably won't do
it; "I want to be able to play with my grandson"
might.
Once you've taken these steps, make sure you have
everything you need (walking shoes or healthy foods,
for instance), and put your plan into action. Then
pay attention to where your plan needs fine-tuning;
making those adjustments will help you stay on track.
