Tambasis exhibit, local work featured at Center for the Arts
The Laredo Center for the Arts is currently featuring several exhibits, including “Flutter” by Georgia Tambasis in the center's main gallery, Exhibit Hall West, through February.
“Flutter” highlights the latest work by Tambasis, whose medium is mostly clay, porcelain, and acrylic, which she uses to paint on to these surfaces.
“I am interested in stacks, layers, and surface,” said Tambasis. “The stacks and layers are not reduced to just a simple process of organization or compulsion. For me, rather, the stacks create an awareness of time, such as indicated by tree rings and erosion. Time is recollected, such as the endless time of being a child at play when an awareness of time was not yet a consideration.”
Tambasis' work is fragile and labor intensive. She begins with various scraps that she has saved, which she then sands and paints. The pieces are stacked together to create different formations.
Tambasis earned a B.F.A. from Youngstown State University in 2001, concentrating in ceramics and sculpture. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2003.
She has been exhibiting since 1994 nationally, and has received numerous awards and honorable mentions in local and regional shows. She has taught at the University of Texas at San Antonio , and currently teaches at the Southwest School of Arts and Craft, Northwest Vista College , and St. Phillips College. She currently lives and works in San Antonio.
Also showing at the Center for the Arts through February is “Landscape Visions” in the Goodman Gallery. This exhibit features paintings from various artists that are part of the Center's permanent collection.
The Community Gallery features artwork by students from Clark Middle School .
The Laredo Art League space is showcasing work Daniel McInnis and Ernie Sherow.
