UISD joins federal lawsuit
United Independent School District has joined Pontiac School District v. Spellings , a lawsuit filed in April in the Eastern Michigan District Court.
The substance of the suit states that school districts don't have to spend their locally raised funding to meet the unreasonable demands of the federal No Child Left Behind law if the federal government does not provide enough funding.
Among those present at the announcement that UISD would join the suit were UISD parents, teachers, and school employees as well as Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association (NEA); Donna New Haschke, president of the Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA); Rob erto Santos, superintendent of UISD; Sylvia Bruni, superintendent of Laredo Independent School District; and John Bruce, UISD board president.
The announcement took place at L.B. Johnson High School in South Laredo .
“We feel that the requirements on Adequate Yearly Progress are very unrealistic. We meet all state mandate requirements yet some of the requirements from the Federal government are very unrealistic as they pertain to special education students,” Santos said.
“Furthermore, they do not provide additional funding to address particular needs, which makes this very difficult to work with,” Santos added.
