Gemini Ink honors Robert Flynn
at Inkstravaganza Gala

SAN ANTONIO - The seventh annual Gemini Ink INKstravaganza gala fundraiser will honor the achievements of author Robert Flynn, this year's recipient of Gemini Ink's Award of Literary Excellence. Among Mr. Flynn's many gifts is a sense of humor with a deadly aim; lovely sparks will assuredly fly on Sunday, September 14 at the Witte Museum, 3801 Broadway. Festivities will commence at 6 p.m. for an evening of food, music, and literature with a Texas (and irreverently Flynnian) twist. Hold onto your chaps and Stetsons.
The Award of Literary Excellence honors San Antonio writers who exhibit exceptional quality in their work and have shown a strong commitment to serving the community. Past recipients of the Award of Literary Excellence are Rosemary Catacalos (2000), Naomi Shihab Nye (2001), and Wendy Barker (2002).
Flynn preserves and furthers the maverick spirit of the best of Texas writers. Formerly novelist-in-residence at Trinity University, he is the author of seven novels: North to Yesterday, In the House of the Lord, The Sounds of Rescue, The Signs of Hope, Wanderer Springs, The Last Kick, and The Devil's Tiger and Tie-Fast Country. He is also the author of a two-part documentary, "A Cowboy Legacy," shown on ABC-TV; a nonfiction narrative, A Personal War in Vietnam; two story collections, Seasonal Rain and Living With Hyenas; and a collection of essays Growing Up a Sullen Baptist, and Other Lies. Among his many awards are honors from the Texas Institute of Letters, the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Texas Literary Festival, and Western Writers of America.
Musical entertainment will be provided by noted guitarist David Underwood, and a highlight of the evening will be a silent and live auction featuring extraordinary gift items. This year's auction includes an official Fotoseptiembre USA piece with work by several prominent area photographers. Also available for purchase at the gala will be a limited edition handcrafted collector's chapbook of Robert Flynn's short story "Multiple Choice," published by Gemini Ink in collaboration with the Paper and Book Arts Department at the Southwest School of Art and Craft.
Tickets for INKstravaganza are $75 per person and may be purchased by calling the Gemini Ink office at (210) 734-9673. Gemini Ink is grateful to Outback Steakhouse, the Witte Museum, the Southwest School of Art and Craft, and Fotoseptiembre USA for their generous support of INKstravaganza.
Gemini Ink, San Antonio's only independent literary arts center, celebrates the art in literature by offering university- and master-level classes, Dramatic Reader's Theater presentations, and Writers in Communities programs that bring literature and literacy to disadvantaged groups. Gemini Ink won the 2002 Downtown Alliance Award for Best Arts & Cultural Program and was recently featured in The New York Times.
