Daughters
of the American Revolution
honor local Korean War veterans
The
Lucy Meriwether chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution hosted a recent reception to honor local
veterans of the Korean War. The event marked the 49th
anniversary of the signing of the armistice with Korea,
which signified the end of that three-year war. The
reception took place at the Radcliffe and Sue Killam
Library at Texas A&M International University.
A commemorative display, produced by Rosemary Contreras
of the Korean War Veterans Committee and Alex Puente
of TAMIU, was presented to the local veterans in honor
of their commitment to serving the nation. Several
D.A.R. members as well as 22 local veterans enjoyed
the display, which included photographs, historical
text, and other memorabilia.
During the program, Dave Leyendecker presented reflections
on the history and impact of the Korean War and discussed
the importance of the struggle between communism and
democracy. "It was a savage war," Leyendecker
said. "There were more than one million casualties
in that war and today, more than 8,000 Americans are
still listed as missing in action."
Many family members of the veterans were also in attendance,
showing appreciation for the recognition of the Korean
War veterans who fought proudly and bravely over 49
years ago.
