The Laredo Public Library's September National Library Card Sign-Up Challenge got a boost recently from Mervyn's with a $2,500 donation.

The challenge takes place throughout September and targets all local public and private schools. The top four schools with the most students signed up for library cards, either new registrations or renewals, will receive prizes of $1,000, $500, $250, and $100 worth of library books for their schools' collections. Each winning school will also receive a special bookplate.

“Area school libraries are not always well-funded and by participating in this challenge, local schools have the opportunity to enhance their collections at no cost,” said María G. Soliz, assistant director of the Laredo Public Library.

Elena Amici, president of Friends of the Library, thanked Mervyn's for the donation. “This will be used to help raise membership population,” said Amici. “It is important that the people use this wonderful building that serves all ages.”

“Mervyn's is glad to give to the community, which is why we are participating in this project,” said Bobby Saenz, executive team leader at Mervyn's Laredo store. “Not only will hundreds of kids experience the excitement of signing up for their first library card, but the challenge is benefiting school library collections as well.”
