High fives to Deirdre Reyna; welcome home Mika

Best wishes to Deirdre Reyna, who has taken the position of public information officer for the Laredo Community College District. Before taking the LCC post, Reyna was the PIO for the City of Laredo Parks and Recreation Department.

She brings with her a wealth of experience in writing and editing, photography, and graphics. A former Marine and a graduate of Texas A&M International University , Reyna worked at the Laredo Morning Times as a writer and a copy editor for five years. She was instrumental in the launch of the LMT Business Journal.

Reyna is an active member of Habitat for Humanity and serves as president of Laredo Under Seven Flags Rotary.

Welcome home, Mika Akikuni, who left us to spend a year with her family in California and Arizona . The former public information specialist at TAMIU is now with the International Bank of Commerce marketing department.

Paco Barrientos and Rosie Coronado of the Rio Group Advertising Agency burned the midnight oil to get the maiden issue of Salud Health and Fitness Magazine into circulation. The visually pretty four color magazine is easy on the eyes and full of information about nutrition, exercise, good health, and preventive measures that can be adapted to remain healthy. Among the contributors to the first issue are physician Dr. Isaias Garza, dietitian Rebekah Alvarez, chef Roberto Gonzalez, and fitness trainer Pepito Espinoza. Other contributors included Isaac Hernandez and Jennifer Coronado.

There are so many good stories to read in the Spring 2005 issue of Prism, the full color magazine of Texas A&M International University. The most compelling of stories is the account of business professor Pornsit Jiraporn of the December 26 tsunami. He was in Thailand visiting his parents over Christmas break.

Also included in this issue of Prism is Jessica Ratliff's story on the University's recently inaugurated Lamar Bruni Vergara Science Center and it 81-seat Planetarium, which includes great commentary from Planetarium director Dr. John Winfrey.
