LCC trustee Cynthia Mares seeks May 15 re-election

 

Laredo Community College incumbent trustee Cynthia Mares will run for re-election in the May 15 county-wide election.

First elected to the board of trustees in 1992, Mares has been instrumental in a decade of decision making that has charted the college's phenomenal growth trajectory of new curriculum, advanced technology, and the inception of the South Laredo campus.

"I am very proud of the forward thinking board action that brought Laredo Community College to South Laredo . The accessibility of this campus will no doubt change lives and thereby change the future of this city," Mares said.

"This board's record of accomplishments in the area of articulation agreements speaks to the progressive nature of the board. We are always looking for ways to expand what we offer our students," she said of agreements with UT-Pan American University , Texas Women's University, Texas State University (SWTSU), and Texas State Technical College .

"I would like to continue providing leadership and sound decision making as a trustee, and I ask the voters of Webb County for their vote," Mares said.

Mares, executive director of the Community Action Agency (CAA) and a well recognized business figure in Laredo, has worked in banking and administration before taking the helm of the CAA.

Mares has served and serves on numerous civic organizations including as chair of the board of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce, South Texas Tech Prep Consortium, SERS Jobs for Progress, the Aztec District of the Boy Scouts of America, the International Good Neighbor Council, and the Laredo Business and Professional Women's Association. She has also served on the board of the Laredo Webb County Food Bank, LULAC Council #12, and the Laredo International Fair and Exposition.

She has been named a Distinguished Alumnus of Laredo Community College, Person of the Year by the Catholic War Veterans, Woman of the Year by the American Association of Retired Persons, and Tejano Achiever by LULAC Council #12. She is the recipient of the LULAC #12 Outstanding Hispanic Achievement Award and was also inducted into the City of Laredo Women 's Hall of Fame.
