An SBDC Success Story: E. G. Security Patrol & Service

On August 19, 2002, Blanca Hilda Gonzalez, the owner of E.G. Security Patrol & Service, came to the Small Business Development Center to request payroll assistance for the busness she and her daughters Maria A. Reyes and Maria Bostick had established in November 2001. Reyes was a security guard for the company and Bostick the company's payroll clerk. They established E.G. Security Patrol Service in November 2001 with four employees. Gonzalez had purchased Quick Books software, but felt the need for additional instruction on processing payroll and preparing quarterly and year-end reports.

Bostick and Reyes took instruction on employment requirements and processing forms for I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification andW-4 Employees Withholding Allowance Certificate. In addition, Bostick and Reyes attended additional seminars for quarterly and year-end report preparation. They also completed a course called "Managing Your Business With Quick Books."

Business Development Specialist Laura Cantu initially instructed Bostick each time she prepared payroll. Eventually, Bostick was confident enough to use Quick Books to process payroll on her own and to make payroll deposits, submitting payroll for Cantu to review. After a few corrections and adjustments from Cantu, Bostick began to process payroll on her own.

At the end of each quarter, Cantu instructed Bostick on the preparation of 941 and TWC quarterly reports on Quick Books. Cantu also worked closely with Bostick to make sure all the previous quarterly payroll reports tied. After reviewing the previous quarters, the end of the year reports were generated on Quick Books.

For the past two years, Bostick has mastered payroll, quarterly, and year-end reports. She credits the SBDC's counseling, training, and courses with sharpening her business acumen and skills. The company continues to turn to the SBDC's resources for guidance in all areas of business.
