Golf Tournament
set for May 24
By Paul de la Peña-Franceschi
The Women's City Club
will host its second annual Memorial Day Golf Tournament
Saturday, May 24, at the Laredo Country Club. The
theme of this year's tournament is a red, white, and
blue salute to Uncle Sam. The tournament will also
serve as a tribute to the late Juvencio de Anda. The
Women's City Club will change the name of the tournament
next year to the Juvencio de Anda Memorial Day Invitational
Golf tournament, according to event organizers.
Tee time is set for 8:30 a.m. with a limited field
of 120 players. The format is a two-person Florida
scramble with prizes and trophies being awarded to
all five flights. Golf entries will be accepted on
a first-pay, first-play basis.
There will be many ways to win prizes, along with
trophies for each winner. The first place team will
receive a $400 gift certificate, the second place
team will receive a $200 gift certificate and the
third place team will receive a $100 gift certificate.
There will also be contests at every hole with prizes
being awarded to the winners.
Entrants can also try their luck in acing a par 3
and winning either a stainless steel Rolex, compliments
of Deutsch & Deutsch Jewelers; a 2003 Ford F-150
four-door Supercrew compliments of Sames Motor Co.;
$10,000 cash compliments of GEO Mortgage; or a 2003
Buick Rendezvous compliments of Powell Watson Motors
Co.
The entry fee of $175 includes a chuckwagon-style
lunch, beverage tickets, a goodie bag containing a
golf shirt, towel, cap, golf balls, and chances to
win raffle prizes.
The Women's City Club is a non-profit organization
that raises money throughout the year to help the
less fortunate in the community. This benefit tournament
is one such way they offer assistance to Laredoans.
