Ecosystem Restoration Project

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with the City of Laredo, initiated a feasibility study in early 2001 to refine the costs, benefits, and plans for the restoration of approximately 130 acres along the Rio Grande in Southwest Laredo. This study funded 100% by the Corps of Engineers supports the City's plans to develop the riverfront area.
The project as proposed, calls for the excavation of the gravel pits and expansion of the wetland area, cleaning & removal of exotic plant species; stabilizing major areas of erosion; and reforesting using native trees & shrubs. The project would provide for aesthetic improvements to the riverfront, help reduce erosion, increase wildlife viewing, and provide for improved water quality through the filtration of surface run-off by the wetlands and the reforested riparian corridor. Project implementation is estimated to cost over $3 million which would be cost shared 65% by the federal government and 35% by the City in the form of cash and/or in kind services.
