Utilities
Department continues to increase emphasis on water conservation
measures
to accomplish the established goals of;
1. Reducing unaccounted-for water to 10 percent
through improved water use accounting, leak detection,
and repair by the Year 2015.
2. Reducing the per capita per day consumption
from an average of 130 gpcd to 110 gpcd by the Year
2015.
3. Increasing the percentage of beneficial
re-use of effluent from the City's wastewater treatment
facilities.
4. Continuing the use of increasing block water
and wastewater rates to discourage excessive usage.
The
City of Laredo Utilities Department has had a water
conservation program in place since 1999.
The department has established a public education
program with a high priority to teach young children
the importance of water for the community. The department
has teamed up with other City departments to make
sure plumbing fixture standards are established and
that Laredoans avail themselves of a retrofit and
replacement program for outdated, water inefficient
plumbling.
Internal changes within the department have been implemeneted
to provide more rapid and efficient repair of broken
lines as well as improving meter replacement. In the
coming years the Department will enhance its ability
to provide effluent reuse for beneficial purposes
and reap the benefits of a once discarded valuable
resource.
Our commitment to providing the best and most efficient
quality and quantity of water to our customers is
foremost in our duties; however, the conservation
of our most important resource will continue to be
among our highest priorities," said Adrian Montemayor
of the Water Utilities Department.
