The Webb County Heritage Foundation will showcase an exhibit of entries in the “Historic Laredo” Photo Competition at a reception on Thursday, December 8 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Villa Antigua® Border Heritage Museum, 810 Zaragoza St.

The public is invited to view all the competition entries on exhibit throughout December and January.

Rosa Coleman’s photo entitled “Cactus Wren at El Progreso Park” was selected as the First Place winner and is featured on the cover of the Foundation’s 2023 calendar. Roberto Martinez’ photograph of “Plaza Theater on Hidalgo St.” won Second Place, and T.J. Montalvo’s photo entitled “Border Heritage Museum” won Third Place. These and other winning photos will be featured in the 2023 Historic Laredo Calendar.

Second Place, “Hidalgo Street” by Roberto Martinez

Third Place, “Border Heritage Museum” by T.J. Montalvo

The calendar will be available for sale at the reception, and thereafter at the Border Heritage Museum, the Republic of the Rio Grande® Museum at 1005 Zaragoza St., and at the WCHF office at 500 Flores Ave.

“As always, this competition captures some remarkable aspects of our community’s architectural, natural, and artistic heritage,” said Margarita Araiza, WCHF Executive Director. “It’s always a very difficult task for the judges to select winners, so the exhibit features all the photos submitted for this competition. We congratulate all the participants, and invite the public to view the beautiful display at the Border Heritage Museum.”

Photos selected for the calendar were judged among entries submitted last summer to the Foundation’s Historic Laredo Photo Competition. The competition was designed to foster a greater appreciation of the region’s historic architecture, significant landmarks, and other notable historical features. In addition, the calendar features some of the important dates in Laredo’s history, which serves as a convenient educational tool.
