A proclamation of environmental solidarity signed by Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz and his Nuevo Laredo counterpart, Mayor Carmen Lilia Cantu Rosas, has set in motion Saturday’s Bi-national Celebration of Dia del Rio and National Make A Difference Day.

The proclamation took place Thursday morning on the banks of the Río Grande at Las Palmas Nature Trail, Laredo’s first birding sanctuary.

Over 300 volunteers are expected to participate in the Oct. 23 community work day at Las Palmas Trail, a natural landmark and a well-known site for local and visiting birders.

The collaboration of Texas A&M International University, the Rio Grande International Study Center, Keep Laredo Beautiful, District 8 Council member Alyssa Cigarroa, Rotary International, the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo, and the Consulate General of Mexico in Laredo enlisted the volunteer workforce.

In May 2021, the Laredo City Council established Las Palmas as Laredo’s first birding sanctuary and natural landmark. Located near downtown, it is so named for the majestic grove of Washingtonia palms that flourish on this small and compact riparian ecosystem. It’s a site for visits by the rare Amazon Kingfisher and countless neotropical birds from Mexico and Central America.
