Journalist Rachel Louise Snyder — the author of No Visible Bruises, What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us — keynotes this year’s Casa de Miseriordia’s virtual fundraiser on April 22 at 6:30 p.m.

The award-winning journalist will share her exploration of the domestic violence epidemic via Zoom link. Her book is the recipient of the Book of the Year Awards of both Esquire Magazine and The New York Times.

Casa de Misericordia, directed by Sister of Mercy Rosemary Welsh, empowers survivors of domestic violence and their children to move forward with their lives by receiving holistic, comprehensive, long-term services that support abuse victims as they reclaim their lives.

Individual tickets for the Zoom event are $125. Platinum sponsorship is $10,000; Gold sponsorships are $5,000; silver for $2,500; and bronze for $1,500. Sponsorships include autographed copies of Snyder’s books, a raffle ticket, and a gift set.

Individual raffle tickets are on sale for $100. The raffle’s first prize is a Cartier Tank Solo Watch donated by Deutsch and Deutsch. Second prize is a Yamaha MusicCast 50 donated by Sound Connection. Third prize is a Sindashi MX hand-painted heart and roses shawl. Raffle tickets are available by calling Charity Ticket Sales at (956) 324-2432 or (956) 285-1925 or at salojo46@hotmail.com or japmom55@hotmail.com

The fundraiser also includes a silent auction on featured items donated by local artists, beauty and fitness packages, and more. To preview the auction, which opens on Monday, April 12, go to https://one.bidpal.net/casademisericordia/welcome

“We are a domestic violence program with a 24-hour emergency shelter and crisis hotline. We offer counseling services, safety planning, legal advocacy, outreach and primary prevention education, nonresidential/outreach services, community referrals, and safe and secure facilities in which survivors and their families can seek refuge, process what has happened, and make well informed decisions about how to move forward,” said Sister Rosemary.

Casa de Misericordia opened its doors on July 7, 1998 in answer to alarming local statistics for women in violent situations and the community’s need for a domestic abuse shelter. The establishment of the shelter was made possible with the award of a Catherine’s Legacy Grant from the Sisters of Mercy, numerous in-kind donations, and contributions from many individuals and families.

“The Laredo community has been very generous with their support of Casa de Misericordia over the past 22 years. Because of this support Casa is able to continue to journey with and respond to survivors’ needs and goals in a way that addresses the current reality while supporting future hopes,” said Sister Rosemary.
