Food sustainability, urban agriculture topics of Mark Winne lecture at TAMIU

Author and food policy expert Mark Winne will lecture on Food Sustainability and Urban Agriculture on Wednesday, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the TAMIU Student Center.

According to his web site (markwinne.com), Minne “writes, speaks, and consults extensively on community food system topics including hunger and food insecurity, local and regional agriculture, community food assessment, and food policy.”

Among his topics is Laredo’s food desert, defined by the United States Department of Agriculture as most of the city — areas lack grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and healthy food providers.

Winne has served as a Senior Advisor at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future where he works on local and state food policy.

He is the author of Stand Together or Starve Alone; Food Rebels, Guerrilla Gardeners, and Smart Cookin’ Mamas; and Closing the Food Gap: Resetting the Table in the Land of Plenty.

Winne’s essays and opinion pieces have appeared in The Hartford Courant, the Boston Globe, The Nation, In These Times, Sierra Magazine, Orion Magazine, Successful Farming, Yes! Magazine, and other organizational and professional journals

He has been instrumental in helping cities develop sustainable and economically robust local food systems and food policy council.
