The Women’s City Club of Laredo made its annual disbursements to 45 local non-profit organizations on January 11 at its installation of officers event at the Laredo Country Club. The grand total for disbursements was $259,360.92.

The WCC, which was established in 1949, has a long history of support for local organizations that strengthen the community through health and educational initiatives. The organization maintains a continued focus on early literacy, scholarship endowments, healthcare advancement, and activities that benefit the youth of Laredo.

Addressing the community’s need for nurses and teachers, the WCC established a $100,000 nursing scholarship endowment at both Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University, and a $100,000 scholarship endowment for teachers through the Laredo Area Community Foundation.

The WCC continues to support the vital social services of organizations such as Border Region MHMR, Texas Migrant Council, Casa de Misericordia, Bethany House, the Ruth B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center, Gateway Community Center, Calvary Center, Habitat for Humanity, Communities in Schools, the Children’s Advocacy Center, Mercy Ministries of Laredo, Junior Achievement, the Rio Grande International Study Center, and numerous others.

Among the fundraisers that members of the WCC undertake annually to be able to assist non-profits are two golf tournaments, a fashion show, Pennies for Tennies, and Dancing with the Stars.
