Laredo businessman Luis F. De La Garza Jr. has announced his candidacy for State Representative-District 42. Surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, he made the announcement on October 5 at Slaughter Park in the Chacon neighborhood where he grew up.

The native Laredoan is a certified appraiser, real estate broker, and small business owner. He earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Laredo State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in history from St. Edward’s University in Austin.

De La Garza said he believes the citizens of District 42 deserve local representation and accountability in Austin. ”They deserve to have a voice at our State Capital. Together, we will be that voice. Our community deserves more. The needs of our taxpayers can no longer be ignored. They do not deserve a lack of representation,” he said.

De La Garza has previously worked in education and the transportation industry. At Laredo Community College he helped create articulation agreements between high schools and LCC for nearly 10 years. He said his two decades in transportation made him aware of the frustration and challenges that the industry faces.

He said that his employment with the City of Laredo during the administration of Mayor Saul Ramirez gave him insight into city services and the local economy. He has served on numerous local, regional, and state boards, including an appointment by Gov. Rick Perry to the Texas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board. De La Garza is currently an active board member of Neighborworks Laredo.

The candidate rolled out his goals for District 42: a self-imposed 10-year term limit; tax relief; enhancing education and the workforce by developing apprenticeship programs that begin as early as the eighth grade; increasing funding for the first two years of college for workforce development; infrastructure repair and completion; economic development through strong public/private partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce, the Laredo Development Foundation, Workforce Solutions, TAMIU, and LCC.
