In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, District V City Council member Nelly Vielma and the Joe A. Guerra Public Library are hosting a screening of four episodes of the PBS series Latino Americans.

The Thursday, October 5 screenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. are “Foreigners in Their Own Land,” which explores the period from 1565 to 1880; and “Empire of Dreams,” which centers on how the American population began to be re-shaped by the influx of immigrants.

The two screenings for Thursday, October 12, include “Prejudice and Pride,” which focuses on the creation of the Chicano identity; and “Perils and Promise,” a look at the last 30 years of immigration and transformation.

The four-part documentary features interviews with nearly 100 Latinos. It is the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape North America for the last five centuries.

Actor Benjamin Bratt narrates the award-winning (Peabody) series.
