Laredo artist Paty Orduña, of late renown for the vivid images from nature that she lends to jute bags, will host a Dia del Río River Painting and Art4Environment workshop on Saturday, October 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The class will be held on the third floor of Falcon International Bank at 7718 McPherson.

The workshop is part of the Río Grande International Study Center’s 23rd Annual Día del Río Celebration.

Participants are invited to paint on a reusable jute bag or on a canvas. The $40 fee covers all painting materials and supplies.

Orduña has organized an impressive list of local artists who will collaborate at the event, including Christina Zorrilla Speer, Alejandra Garza, Paquita Palacios, Maru Portillo Alexander, and Jessica Diez Barroso.

Orduña said she hopes participants are ready to get in touch with nature and to reach their creative instincts. She said she will start the workshop with relaxation exercises that open the imagination to a visualization of the river, how its water flows, sunrises and sunsets, the play of wind on water, and the river ecosystem.

“We are bringing bright neon colors to the workshop so we can get flashy and extravagant results,” she said.

Orduña, an accomplished artist, is the art program coordinator for Border Region MHMR. She has structured art programs for patients suffering clinical depression, schizo affective disorders, and bipolar disorders.
