Habitat for Humanity of Laredo and Webb County will host a July 29 golf tournament at the Lake Casa Blanca Golf Course to raise funds for Laredoans who did not have home insurance or who did not qualify for assistance to repair their homes after the May 2017 storm.

Members of the non-profit that has built more than 100 zero-interest homes in Laredo are taking on the fundraising initiative with the drive and commitment for which the organization is well known.

Monies raised at “The Hottest Golf Tournament in Texas” and other Habitat events will buy building and repair materials.

“We are looking for sponsors for the tournament as well as for golfers,” said Habitat’s resource development manager Cindy Liendo.

Texas Community Bank is the title sponsor for the tournament. Other sponsors include Family Chevrolet, Killam Development, John Solis, Webb County Commissioner Wawi Tijerina, Webb County Commissioner Jesse Gonzalez, AEP, IBC, Buddy Bruni, Gateway Air Conditioning, and Houser Roofing.

Registration for the July 29 golf tournament begins at 7 a.m. The cost is $125 per player.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

FOR REPAIRS

Liendo said that the organization is also asking for volunteers to help make repairs once funding is secure. “All volunteers are welcome — individuals as well as skilled carpenters, plumbers, roofers, and contractors. We are also actively seeking donations of materials,” she said.

Those in need of repairs are urged to call 311.

According to Arturo García, director of the City’s Community Development Department, there are at least 200 uninsured homeowners and renters who did not qualify for City programs that assisted in the aftermath of the storm. “The City’s inability to meet FEMA’s threshold left many unable to get assistance. There were many mobile home owners who had damages and did not have clear title to their homes. Some who owned mobile homes on rented lots also had problems qualifying.”

García said those individuals could qualify for Habitat’s services.

The Laredo City Council has authorized an MOU to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Laredo and Webb County for future assistance in storm related repairs.

Habitat for Humanity is planning an additional fundraiser on August 19, a fashion show staged by the Avante Modeling Agency at Embassy Suites. For information on the fashion show or the golf tournament, call the organization’s offices at (956) 724-3227.
